Tamper train length? 30/08/2018 at 22:50 #111658

Hi all,

I'm just getting into writing one of my first timetables (for the West Anglia sim) and there are a couple of tamper trains running about in the early hours.

However, try as I might, I've not been able to find what they consist of and thus their lengths. Would anyone have any generic length for them that is about right?

Likewise with speed - they appeared to move quite slowly to the worksite...

All the best,
Joe

If you download the 'Length Calculator' you'll find a tab on that lsberlled Track Machines which has a few different tampers & other track machines listed.

For the speed of tampers, I have found specifications on the tampers that Network Rail use here https://www.volkerrail.co.uk/en/plant/otm-sc-tamper

Unfortunately this does not include length but judging by the images i estimate it to be about 2 train cars in length.

What headcodes are they? I will be able to look up which machines they are as each individual tamper/stone blower etc always keeps the same headcode. once I know which machine it is i can get you length and max speed (Which only applies outside of engineering possessions)

I use a default 20m at 60mph for Tamper/Track Machine movements in my timetables. Most of the workings seen around Carlisle/Preston end are 6T4*, 6J**, 6U**.

I thought you'd be able to give the lengths to the millimeter from your stock books!

A tamper is a shorter length than a 2-car pacer.

Kev

I could do that Kev, but it depends on the era his timetable is for. My stock books are the BR CM&EE books & some of those tampers/track machines no longer run on todays railway.

Are you sure they all are?

Some of the bigger OTMs are long.

6J45 is machine DR73911 a Colas Rail Switch & Crossing Tamper. It is 18m long and it has a max speed of 50mph.
6U36 is machine DR80216 a Harsco stoneblower owned by Network rail. it is 32m long and has a max speed of 60mph.
Please note that inside possessions and worksites they DO NOT travel at their maximum speed.

25mph when entering, leaving, or making a movement within a possesion.

5mph maximum in a worksite, unless the ES (Engineering Supervisor) gives authority, then see above.

Here are the Rule Book Entries:

RSSB Hand for ES (Engineering Supervisor) or SWLs(Safe Work leader) in Possessions states,

"After you have given specific instructions to the driver or
machine controller, you may allow movements to run at
caution above 5 mph (10 km/h).
You must tell the driver or MC that the movement must
be made at no greater speed than 5 mph (10 km/h)
through the site of work if you have agreed this with an
IWA or COSS.
If you have agreed that the COSS will use lookout
warning during darkness or where the site of work is in
or near a tunnel, you must instruct the driver or MC that
the movement must be made at no greater speed than
20 mph (30 km/h) through the site of work."

RSSB Rule Book Module T3, Section 9.6 states,

"9.6 During the movement
a) Making the movement
You must:

make the movement at caution

not exceed 25 mph (40 km/h) at any point in the journey when
entering, making a movement within, or leaving the possession

make any movement in a work site at no greater than 5 mph (10
km/h) unless you are given specific instructions by the ES or
SWL

be prepared to stop before reaching a handsignal that is being
displayed."
