Hey all,

Just a general question as people on here might know!
What Font did the Eastern Region Us for their Diagrams?
I make (Fictional) diagrams in my spare time and just picked an appropriate text but was curious which Text they actually used (and if it's publically available)

(Its also a little self-promo xD, as when I've shown people they're impressed I can make these from scratch in paint!)

of the attached
(AJ) Is based on GCR
(LD2) Is based on the LNWR/LMS
(Y1) is based on Furness (latterly LMS)

The Frames & Blocks are all made from scratch pixel by pixel by myself in detail at 800x zoom in paint xD

(feel free to right-click > Save As > Then Open Them in Paint/Photo apps them for a better view)

As I understand it and I don't know if it actually applied in respect to signalling diagrams but I am aware that the LNER used Gills Sans which was later adopted by the fledging British Railways before being replaced by Rail Alphabet which was also used by the NHS etc...

I'm sorry I can't be of more here here and I have checked my ever growing collection of design manuals and fonts which forms part of a interest I have in graphical design.

Nice diagrams. Reminds me of my attempts at toying around with the SimSig font, though of course that isn't really ideal for mechanical boxes :).

Ah well that's helpful to know, was just curious really, and thanks haha, yeah haha IECC's have escaped me in drawing yet as they are very different to mechanical boxes

There's somebody who was working on something for such purposes using the SimSig font (with Geoff's approval: see here), but they seem to be inactive so I don't know if there's anything that will come out of that.

BR standardised their diagrams and almost universally used the same standard of stencils, replacing the individual diagram styles that the 'big-four' used.

If you have an eBay account, the stencils that were traditionally used are 'Uno' and there are many that are available for sale there. The modern day stencils used for technical drawings are slightly different, although they have a very similar alphabet.

For many of the traditional stencils or letraset typefaces, these aren't generally freely available as a computer font. If they are, then it's usually for a price. As far as I am aware Uno is not available for download, although it was produced as a computer font as a bespoke purchase for another company.

Some of the nearest equivalents that are available as a computer font are: Bryant (although the numbers aren't reflective of the style used for BR's diagrams), Proxima and Linotte.

ah okay, so it was a general typeface for all areas, good to know!

and i see I'll have to go have a look on eBay for them, and kinda makes sense they aren't free being how much BR used them, but thanks for the suggestions!
