What did the "lost" editor let you do that's superior to a word processor?

I can imagine an editor which already contains a grid of blank characters you can move around with the cursor, which has some kind of block-select cut-and-paste support for easier repositioning...

It is good to see that there are fellow SimSig-ers with creative minds during these times. Here is an effort on my part in the guise of a mock-up of Seamer. I think I have it right although I have done the Bridlington fringe as shown here as I am not sure as to the method of working. This isn't the only mock-up I have done and I may post one or two of the others.

The layout shown here is done to be as close a replica as possible of the panel as shown at https://photos.signalling.org/index?/category/2440-2008_august and thoughts are welcome.

Dave

And here is the S&C with all crossings, tunnels, and TC's as per Real Life.

The IBS's seem very lopsided and awkward but think I've made it work, I was debating adding in Horrocksford junction & Daisyfield?

Arcow quarry sidings appear to be missing (GF on the down between settle and ribblehead.)

I think the fringe is right, it worked under slots IIRC, looks like a very good mockup! I can imagine the entire york - Scarborough would be 1 sim, though I'd wish anyone luck as to making the gantry at Falsgrave in simsig xD

Very nice! You're quite a bit faster than me- I've only got to Settle Junction, having started at Daisyfield...

Thanks! haha, obtaining certain diagrams in a decent quality proved tricky but worked out alright, its a good challenge trying to make these mocks, debating what to make next, Either the Cumbrian Coast, Carlisle - Newcastle, Or East Yorkshire

This is what happens when you start opening ROCs controlling large areas.

Just a heads up, the points in platform 5 are actually worked by a ground frame released from the SC - you can even see the GF from the station. I do however like the slots both to and from Aviemore (although bear in mind it would read "Moy (Aviemore)", as Moy is the first loop which is (was) controlled by Aviemore SB, now Inverness SC) - this is how the single line was worked in real life. Photo of Aviemore panel attached for reference, although please excuse the scorch marks... it was taken a few weeks before decommissioning, and the old neon lamps had taken their toll

Also, plenty of reference photos of Inverness panel in this Flickr album by Llangollen Signalman (who I believe is also a member of the forum) - https://flickr.com/photos/llangollen_signalman/albums/72157626592432648

Yeah Llandovery & the HOW line is the closest current thing to a token worked line so been using it as a base xD

And yeah I did wonder about Platform 5 as there was no signalled move to head southwards, so useful to know, I'll go get that added!

and ah yeah, I'll add the "moy" bit, and I've done this pre- the Elgin/Forres/Nairn & Aviemore resignalling
and yeah the Llangollen signalmans page really quite useful! I've been using the sectional appendix for north of Inverness as there are No TCs
The arrangement at Dingwall is one, I've had to keep playing around with, as IRL the driver plunges for the route set and its agreed with Inverness West RETB SCC but not sure how you would replicate that in simsig,

Realistically, RETB would probably be replicated in SimSig by a whole bunch of stop boards (as in real life), with no track circuits. Drivers would phone the Signaller for permission to pass the stop boards at each station, with the Signaller manually interposing train descriptions.

The junction logic I suppose could be the same as is used in off-sim junctions, such as Baguely Fold Jn on Manchester North (when not chained). In real life, RETB signallers have no remote control over points at all - all pointwork is either automatic (such as at loops), controlled by traincrew (such as at Dingwall and Crianlarich) or manually worked using ground frames.

Also, don't forget about the swing bridge at Clachnaharry!

IIRC there are some local TC and interlocks for these junctions, albeit invisible to Inverness. I think it is to prevent either route from Dingwall being set if a train is between Dingwall and Fodderty / Evanton 'IB', and to be sure there is a train at Dingwall. I have the details somewhere.

As for 'train crew operated' ....that is unless there is someone on the platform in which case they get asked to push the button instead !

Yeah, i found the swing bridge early on, with it's up & down slots plus the crossing it monitors! -

and so in terms of how it looks, not much visual is needed, its all "automatic" so to speak the head code will just move with the way the train is booked.

(I've attached my progress so far on the North lines for a visual aid)

Aaand got the Kyle - Of - Lochalsh line done

Pretty much how the token sections have been implemented on hereford and Cardiff valleys would be a good copy and paste representation of RETB, although I'm not sure how it would cope with issuing long section tokens.

Yeah Long Section/Short Section tokens & Intermediate Block Stop Boards are a new thing for me. Never seen them before!

I assume it'd all be done through a call, and one of the responses is to issue a "long" token and another for a "short" one

I note it says RETB West and North, does that mean there are at least 2 workstations? Seems a bit excessive for the number of trains at any given time.

Yeah I found this, from research it has
"West" - that deals with Inverness To Dingwall & Kyle Of Lochalsh
"North" - From Dingwall - Wick & Thurso
Plus a manned crossings work station for the hundreds of them en-route

and that S&C looks incredible, opposite way around to mine but yeah looks ace, a small but I can guess busy little sim it'll be

They split the interlockings because you can only issue 5 Engineer’s tokens per interlocking at any one time. Before the split the place went like a fair on weekday mornings between the trains and maintenance work. It was difficult for anyone to get a word in edgeways at times.
