Hi all,

The PC to which my purchased sims were locked has died (motherboard failure)

Whilst I await the delivery of a replacement (should arrive tomorrow) would someone be kind enough to release my purchased sims so as I can re-install on a new machine please.

Thank you

Vince

Please follow the instructions I posted in this thread yesterday to request the unlock: https://www.SimSig.co.uk/Forum/ThreadView/53696?postId=143637

It makes it easier for the admins to action the request and avoids the risk of a forum post being overlooked.

Side note:

In theory, if you keep using the old hard drive and just swap out the motherboard (I think these days Windows can mostly cope with that scenario, and indeed I've successfully done that recently that when my CPU and/or motherboard started behaving more and more erratically, too), an unlock might not even be needed? I know Windows and Office are looking at the motherboard and do indeed require a reactivation if you swap that out, whereas some other software I have only seems to be interested in the hard drive for licensing purposes – I had to reinstall it after exchanging my system drive for a larger one, but not when I did the recent mainboard swap.

I don't know how finicky Simsig is in that regard, though, as I didn't have any licenses locked to my computer during that recent event. And if you are changing the main hard drive, then I guess you'll indeed need an unlock anyway, even if you were to clone the old drive contents onto the new drive.

Jan,

Thank you - from what I understand Windows will cope with a only very limited number of major changes to a PC configuration. As the PC that died has had a very much different configuration to the new one I doubt very much that I could have simply used the SSD from the old one to the new.

It has 2 hard disks in instead of of 4
It has two new video cards to run 4 monitors
It has two USB 3 cards

The new motherboard is also a different manufacturer to the previous one which I understand also counts as a major change.

Thanks for the link - I was unaware that this page existed.

Regards

Vince

Windows might have some trouble indeed but it should work well enough to unlock your sims (even if it fails to activate.) Nevertheless, that's probably harder to do than requesting an unlock.

License keys can nowadays be baked into motherboards which eases activation, but I am not sure whether all desktops use this feature (laptops generally do.)

Hi all,

Just out of curiosity, I used my old hard drive in my new machine which arrived this morning. The machine and its drives were set up for Win 11.

There were clearly issues as I couldn't get any of the USB ports to function and the video cards, network connections and other vital parts of the machinery didn't work correctly.

So now I have the fun of spending about a week re-installing all of the software to run all of the things I do with my machine.

I am not looking forward to trying to set up 6 different sound codecs and associated drive levels to run my amateur radio applications and software defined radios which was hard work under Win 10.

THE GOOD NEWS.

Simsig works flawlessly!!

Thanks for everyone's help.

Off of SimSig topic, but you might struggle with some driver compatibility on Windows 11 for some of the older amatuer radio stuff. Even some of the data leads for modern rigs like the FT-991A / FTM-400 are a struggle to get going, I've got two identical leads for my two FTM-400s, leant them both to another local station as he couldn't get his one working, one works flawlessly, the other doesn't, go figure! Good luck!
