Do conflicts of interest expire? 17/04/2022 at 07:41 #146173

The following post includes assumptions and hopes which may not be based in fact or reality. Reader's discretion is advised.

The ultimate question of my post is: Do conflicts of interest for Simsig expire? I assume the answer is: Depends.

The curiosity came along as I found pictures on Signalling.org from 2015 of a Slough (New) IECC Simulator. (EDIT: The pictures are dated from 2009 but posted to the website in 2015) Based on the pictures I saw, I saw that the formatting of the simulator was identical to that of Simsig. I gained the assumption that this was a commercial product developed by Mr. Mayo's company, and per the conflicts of interest page, I gained another assumption. That second assumption was that if a commercial version of Slough (New) IECC seemed to exist, then it is not too likely a personal, home version of the same area would be released.

But then I gained a glimmer of hope: Perhaps, just perhaps, the contract which governs this allows for expirations or the eventual release of outdated commercial products. After all, the conflict of interest page says the list is fluid, non-determinative, and handled on a case-by-case basis.

But of course, it is possible that an answer to this question cannot be given for business reasons. The question must still be asked.

Thank you!

You need to look further back for a better understanding. Both IECC (ie computer based) and NX panels (buttons) both existed before SimSig.

SimSig started out as an enthusiast 'game' (sorry Geoff !) where NX panel areas were simulated with 'IECC' style visuals for home PC use.

Some NX boxes (Swindon for example), having been very helpful in gathering data for SimSig, also began to use SimSig as part of signaller training.

From this came a fully commercial version (TreSim) with additional trainer interfaces and functions way beyond the SimSig F11. Where data was provided for a TreSim, that data could only be used for TreSim, and as 'data' cannot be proven as to source, these areas would not be considered for a SimSig.
Example: Colchester.

So SimSig looks like an IECC, not the other way round.

TreSim is now 'Dessan Simulate' https://www.hitachi-infocon.com/dessan-rail/

Not quite – the initial demo version of Simsig was Fenchurch Street (an IECC) and then the initial releases were Liverpool Street and subsequently Didcot/Swindon B, i.e. both IECCs, too.
The first NX panels (or otherwise) reimagined with IECC graphics did came soon afterwards, as the earliest snapshot of the .co.uk domain a few months later already includes Stafford, Waterloo and Southampton, but they were definitively not the first sims released.

I think it was Didcot that was the start of Simsig's professional career as TRESIM, wasn't it? The old homepage from 2001 says Quote:
Welcome to the home of truly authentic railway signalling simulations! Don't believe us? Railtrack Great Western Zone are currently trialling an enhanced version of Didcot!

Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

Thanks for the corrections.

Another archive.org grab (2002) explains more about Didcot/SwindonB and the first SimSig/TreSim....

We thought the source code to Fenchurch Street was lost, but I was able to recover the sim data and timetable from a data file that was associated with the binary (the sim used a crude version of the Loader rather than the separate EXE approach Geoff then moved to). So I was able to re-release it as "Fenchurch Street Reborn", available bugs and all.
