So, I commute through Guildford on both GWR & SWR. I am beginning to wonder which will arrive in regular passenger service here first, the much advertised class 701 Arterio or the class 769 tri-mode. There's signage at Ash for a class specific stopping point for the 769 & traction swap over prompts. Plus the stop boards have been updated at NCM to a 4 car or 'S' board from the normal 3 & 6 car markers. But I've heard that TfW are hating theirs with a high attrition rate which may be slowing the GWR's introduction. Though there was a unit stored in the carriage sidings to the north of the station a few weeks ago (unsure if it remains, but the track now has a sleeper chained across it) SWR however were causing much hullabaloo about their solve all train for surburban routes last year and with withdrawal of the (from a long legged passenger's perspective) awful class 456 earlier in the year could mean they anticipate replacement before normal passenger traffic levels return. So if anyone have any insight or speculation about which will arrive first I'd be glad to hear it. The train now standing on platform 2, should be on the rails Log in to reply |

From what I've seen on other Forums, it's a minor miracle if a 769 makes it out and back on a test/training run without jacking. The Northern and TfW sets are hardly covering themselves in glory either. All in all, I suggest consulting your astrologer as their guess is as good as anyone's...

Our 701's are still a good while away still. Infact we are moving 450's onto metro services soon mainly Guildford Via Cobham, Chessington South & Woking stoppers to cover for 455's that will be going over and covering for the 707's that will be leaving us for South Eastern this summer. I think the earliest the absolute earliest we may see a 701 in service is Winter. We've not started out crew training yet and nothing in the horizon telling me it'll be this side of leaf fall unless something majorly changes.
