A couple of years since I was there, and it was a Christmas Market day, but it was blocked off fully with sand / water filled red & white plastic walls. It falls more into the 'have not bothered to remove the road lights' category, although for that road width something more than the standard footpath side pedestrian light would be justified. Not quite flashing lights....but.......... I can't recall of a pedestrian crossing that was designed and installed with flashing red lights, but i can recall one oddity that i have never seen anywhere else - and i was part of it's design team. Wareham in Dorset, had it's level crossing removed when an overpass was built by the local council. However, it was decided that this was not a reasonable pedestrian diversion, so the existing level crossing was to be made into a pedestrain crossing.... The complicating factor being that the crossing was originally gatewheel operated, and so there were no lights. It was decided to convert this crossing to miniature red/green warning lights. BUT, the small lights were not considered to be visually arresting enough when compared to the original full width level crossing gates. So bigger lights were needed..........So what was actually installed were full sized 2-aspect signal heads for pedestrians. it looked ridiculous. But, as far as i am aware, no-one got hit by a train there, so it looks like it worked. I must say, it looks very different on google streetview to how i remember it - i might have to do another site visit after some 30 odd years - to revise on the local pubs etc.

Indeed. Another one left to stop cyclists ? Seems you need to walk beyond the red stop lights to get to the footbridge, whose sole use is to cross the railway when the crossing is shut. Log in to reply |
