I have been trying to replace my avatar but am getting a "system error uploading file" message. The replacement file is a .jpg, 400 x 400 with no spaces or special characters in the file name and is 71KB on the hard disk. I have tried in a couple of browsers and also reducing the size to 200 x 200 and saving as a .png rather than .jpg but the error persists. Looks like it was a write-permissions error on the folder, stemming from the server move a few months ago. Fixed.
