Crew Changes 12/07/2023 at 18:03 #152358

I have several trains stacked up at York Yard South junction all awaiting crew changes. All trains are 35-45 minutes early and having nowhere to stable them I am wondering if I can get the crews to change early? I have tried playing around with the times in the timetable edit but cant find a way to achieve this. I have had to delete the crew change to get the trains to move on.

TIA

Tom

Which timetable? Assuming it's about trains going north, you can a) put them into Holgate Reception sidings (if there's still space) or b) if those are full, too, and you can't avoid blocking the Down Leeds, interpose "BLOK" at signal 735 (first signal on the Down Leeds coming from Church Fenton) in order to get the Leeds signaller to send trains via the Down Normanton – while that'll likely cause some additional conflicts with trains on the ECML, at least it avoids passenger trains from Leeds (and other trains that don't need to queue up for a crew change) being stuck behind freight trains waiting for their relief.
Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

That's an unfortunate side effect of early running freight, especially if you have delays on as more will enter early and run early. you can stack them on the slow at Skelton and Skelton Bridge Junctions and that's about it really.

you can amend the trains schedule with an earlier crew arrival time, or the simpler option is to order the train to go non stop through its next station stop and it will bypass stopping for a crew change. IRL you wouldn't get this as trains wouldn't run that early if due relief unless agreed in advance with early relief available.

There is also the option of using "Delay/abandon crew change" from the F2 menu when the train is already sat waiting for the new crew.

Regulating freighters that show up off their path is one of the great joys of SimSig. You tend to learn every single place you can hold them and divert pax around.

Going south on York sim, you can stack heaps of trains on the slow at Skelton Bridge and put anything you don't want to hold onto the fast at Tollerton. They can wait there almost indefinitely until their crew is due. You can also park them between Tollerton and Thirsk. Stacks of room!

The one limitation with the York North/South Sim is this for when trains run early the WTT's for the Eastern and LNE Zones back in the day had a lots of Padding in them for engineering works on that section of the ECML to take into account single line working some trains used to be given 25 mins engineering time between Tollerton and Skelton Junction.
In reality the box would speak to the Chargeman at York Yard North and stable trains in the North Yard and the Up Arrivals and when the crew was due and in position they would then drop the trains down to York Yard South Jn. In reality very trains changed crew at York Yard South Jn it was nearly always done at York Yard North as the incoming traincrew would have a facilities break in the shunters cabin.

After 2004 when the York Yards complex was unmanned and only manned when a train due you would just get put in the que or held back wasn't un herd of to be held in the platform at Northallerton or even on the fast line at Thirsk in the small hours and have trains routed round you till booked time.
