I've been having issues with the train description not stepping up where expected or at all after reversing movements, both:
-from signal SY240 (for ex. in my picture, 0L19, which has stepped up to SY49 instead of SY50; a minor annoyance as it then needs to move further in the up direction to SY217 to complete its run-round of 1L19 [i.e. see below], thus necessitating manual interposing).

-from platforms 3 or 4 onto the Up line [SY217], or vice-versa; if it is not manually interposed.

I'm not sure if this is working as intended "as-in-real-life" or a bug (from my experience on other sims, the TD should automatically step-up to the correct side upon the route being set and the signal clearing).

Reason: order logically

For manual interposing, instead of placing a sticky note on top of the train, go to your F3 settings, ensure that "right click cancelles routes" (under control) is off, then you can right click on a signal, the on holding the train back from its direction of travel, and interpose a train description that way.

IE at SY50 for plat. 4 going to SY217 (rev)

Salisbury sim, in my experience, doesn't always manage to set the train descriptions, especially when using custom/ user submitted timetables

I put a sticky note as a reminder for myself to still be able to check if the TD would be transferred from the reversing movement from SY217 [my tests reveal it only does so if the TD is manually interposed at SY217 but not if it is at SY40].

Re. timetable: for avoidance of doubt this is the 1988 TT provided with the sim.

I can not seem to reproduce this with the TT itself or using debugs. When pull off signal 50, 0L19 headcode shuffles along then steps to signal 40.

If you have any more information as to any other actions you took during this run round it would be appriciated, but as it stands I can't reproduce.

Could you provide details of your sim version. You can find that info in the hamburger menu under "Help" and then "about".

I have found something that may be relevant:
When on the same difficulty settings as Alex, STANDARD, some TDs do not carry across when shunting/ reversing/ running around. However when using default: perfect/ beginner difficulties then there is no such problem. I had noticed something odd myself in the past when playing on different difficulties the TRSMD would sometimes have the TDs there, sometimes not and I couldn't figure it out.

I have directly attached some screenshots, as well as a ZIP folder with all screenshots and save files in

From the manual

TORR: Train Operated Route Release can be switched On or Off. Off is prototypical, though it will add a little more difficulty.

Difficulty: Easy mode can be selected, in which extra TD berths are shown, along with other small aids, whereas Standard represents the real panel as far as possible.

TSRs: Set the frequency of Temporary Speed Restrictions . Select either None, One (where one of the pre-programmed TSRs will be imposed) or All, where all 3 will be in force.

Bad Weather: If ticked, poor weather conditions will be affecting the area, resulting in trains being slower to accelerate and braking earlier.

Call frequency from LCs: Select the frequncy of calls from AHBs and user-operated crossings. Select either None, Rare or Common.

Passed the age to be doing 'Spoon Feeding' !!!

You seem to have answered your own question though :)

Meld has quoted the Salisbury manual but this is typical for SimSig. In real life some depots and sidings have the ability to interpose train descriptions which will be passed to the signal box but that is not all that common. Similarly sometimes even with VDUs TDs will not always step and not all signals will have TD berths. On panels you are likely to have fewer berths to play with and less comprehensive and complete stepping. On easier difficulty settings SimSig may help you out by providing more berths and having depots interpose for you, but on harder settings it will be more realistic, which I think makes perfect sense.

If you look at the real panel you'll note that the train describer isn't even integral to the panel

Instead you have the VDU screens above:

In practice you really don't need a loco's TD.

Quite correct when you have just a simple loco run-round to deal with; but the 1988 TT has plenty of sometimes not so simple joins and divides [for which the ACI doesn't always work as intended either], and when it gets busier, you take all the help you'll get.

@Hap: I guess later comments have probably answered the why you couldn't reproduce it, but just in case, the latest version available from the launcher (Salisbury Ver. 1.1); other settings as in the pictures.

So is this a "working as in real-life" situation or not? The manual is silent about the TD berths at the station. I know that for ex. Exeter (also a panel, though in that case the prototype did have the usual integrated TD berths) does have the TDs stepping up and reversing without issue.
