Hi

I’m due to start the TCB course and have been having a look at the simulator. Please could someone explain the difference between the red buttons and yellow buttons.

It’s probably a better question for your trainer, rather than a bunch of random people on an internet who aren’t necessarily qualified to give you a correct answer.

Thank you. I’ve been working AB boxes for the last 5 years so thought I would do a bit of preparation so any guidance would be great.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Yellow is for subsidiary aspects. A yellow exit button allows you to specifically select a call-on aspect rather than the main aspect. Generally red and yellow entrance buttons are for signals with both main and subsidiary aspects and yellow only is for position-light signals but I wouldn't get too hung up on it as spares are hard to come by.

So am I right in thinking when I’ve heard the phrase ‘red to yellow follow a fellow’ that means if you pass the exit signal go at caution and be prepared to stop short of any obstruction?

And ‘yellow to red shunt ahead’ means?

Is that from a driver? If so, I would expect it to mean that, if you see a red signal turn yellow, it means you've got another train in front of you - with a red signal plus overlap between - so no point in speeding too fast.

No it's a signaling phrase, or a derivate of anyway as I've not heard it exactly like that, describing which colour buttons you've pressed to set a route.

Red to red on you go (You're setting a main aspect route)
Red to yellow follow your nose (You're setting a call on)
Yellow to yellow at your peril (You're going shunt to shunt and anything might happen)

I am going to echo the original reply that you had from JamesN. Let this be discussed with your trainer. It doesn't look good publicly asking these things. As an interviewer and/or trainer.. I woudln't expect you to know the ins and outs of the job. Those aspects are the aspects that you are going to be trained on.

Any input that is given from here would have to be taken with a pinch of salt, because you have no idea who these people are and if they are actually qualified to give such advice.

If I was the person to be taking you through training, I wouldn't look kindly on this such of scoping. Maybe contacting colleagues internally would be a better option. If you have 5 years XP in AB... Is this with NR? Remember that these places are open to people to see. You've stated that you're due to go through the Gatestown Sim... It would be easy to pin point you as a person with the information you have already recieved today, and that isn't a good thing. You will learn what you need to learn when you are in training. You have signalling experience already so the next lot of stuff should be like water off a ducks back.

When I did IST a year ago. I made this simulation of the gatestown panel. Although it has no interlocking it just gave me and my classmates an idea on how the panel works and put reminders on etc.

What do the little dots with arrows through them mean, eg in advance of signal 6 please?

Well said Hap. As an experienced trainer/signaller, learning such phrases could lead you into trouble. You will find that whilst after AB your next step is TCB, just like AB boxes, there are numerious TCB boxes all with different ways of working and operating. Ways you will learn once you have finished the training course and go to the box you have been given. Your trainer will give you all the necessary training you need. Advice on these forums are not necessarilly coming from actual real-life Signallers. Wait for your course, you will be given everything you need to know.
