I'm running the 2003 timetable and am around 0600 with many freight trains wanting to seemingly go through Basford Hall yard. Do all trains containing SSN/SSM in the timetable need to go via the yard, or can some be routed via the Up Independent lines? At present Up Arr 1/2/Loop are backed up.

No. Anything timed to Basford Hall and beyond can take any route to get there.

The yard can be used to recess upto 3 up trains (4 if you count the UTS), or they can be simply routed via the Up Independent. It might handle more, but isn't a case I'd considered until now.

If of course the train terminates in the yard, then it must go in.

The only real problem I've run into during the 2003 timetable is a train that sits at SSN for five hours waiting crew, but is too long to use the TS or IL without blocking the rest of the yard. So I send it into the Up Loop, where it happily sits - but nothing enters from the Up Loop entry point. Probably the train is sitting on the entry track or is otherwise interfering with the entry conditions.
