Remember British Rail anyone? What a sad state of affairs. Industries, utilities, rail freight companies all sacrificed on the altar of globalisation and the EU. Now it’s Chiltern Railways turn. Is there no end to this madness? Are there no politicians out there that care for British businesses and jobs?

Unless I'm missing the point, DB taking over Chiltern is old news - it happened 2 years ago

By and large the SimSig forum has kept away from politics (no official line on that) just a fact. Can't help felling that it's an area we're best keeping clear of in the future too. If anyone wants an official line on it talk to me off board and I'll talk to Geoff and we'll publish the conclusion.

DB also now own EWS, and I believe are looking to run international freight and passenger services on HS1 once that's opened up to all in the near future.

NedRail operate the Northern and Merseyrail Franchises, and don't forget that First is a Canadian, not a British Company and they operate lots of services in the UK.

This internationalisation of the franchises is good - Chiltern, Northern and Merseyrail have become parts (distant, but still parts) of the respective country's nationalised railways. So while to UK eyes they're privatised, they are in fact nationalised with someone else's government. No profiteering or shareholders to satisfy so the operators can concentrate reinvestment and providing a decent service. Surely that's a good thing, whomever is doing it.

Good points James, although franchises run by someone else's government will still be looking to make a profit - the social/service motive won't be the prime driver as it might/should in the home country, as they can't justify subsidising our own railways in the same way as they could/should their own!

I think you are mistaken; it is true that First has extensive North Americal operations the Parent Company (First Group PLC) is based in Aberdeen having been born from Grampian Regional Transport many years ago.

Mind my words... Northern will be re-branded in Abellio and the Dutch Fish-hook logo will apear on the trains soon. There are even rumors one or two Dutch doubledecker IRM sets are being branded in Abellio liverie to make customers more aware of the international brand of NS.

NS already operates in London under their Abellio brand: http://www.travellondonbus.co.uk/
