Derby in those days saw a clock face timetable across all the services. To summarise, every hour has:
Local services are mainly made up of train classes 153, 156 and 158.
The only services that terminate of note are:
Northern Rail operate one train a day in each direction between Sheffield and Nottingham via Derby for route knowledge purposes.
Barton Under Needwood (Barton Central Rivers) is Cross Country's depot from where Class 220 & 221 of both Cross County & West Coast head out to take up duty all over the country with several running via Alrewas.
Most freight traffic operates straight through the area and consists of anything from Freightliners to Aggregates traffic.
Daily tanks also run to/from Sinfin and require numerous run rounds to get them where they are supposed to be.
Derby is also home to the Railway Technical Centre (RTC) which houses Network Rail's fleet of test trains, which can be seen frequently running to and from most parts of the country.
Adtranz also have a presence in the area and occasionally a newly built unit can be seen leaving heading to its new home.
Burton West Yard also handles a handful of container trains during the course of the day.
Most of the traffic between Bardon Hill & Burton had by this time stopped aside from a few trains into Mantle Lane TC to run round then to/from Bardon Hill Quarry. Drakelow Power Station and both Swains and Lounge Opencast mines had been closed down with part of the track into Drakelow being lifted.
