Loop

A loop is a branch line that deviates from a direct route and rejoins it at another location. Loops are used to enable trains to pass each other, whether in the same or opposite direction.

Passing loop

Is found on a single track line and enables trains going in opposite directions to pass each other.

Goods Loop

Is a loop for goods/freight trains only to allow faster, passenger, trains to pass on the main line. You may incur a warning and even a points penalty in SimSig if you route a passenger train through a goods loop.

Passenger loop

Is a loop for any train to use to allow a faster train to overtake.

Before signalling a train to enter a loop you should be certain that the length of the train, particularly a long goods train, does not exceed the length of track available in the loop. If the sim contains loops, its manual should list their lengths. You can read the length of any train in the Length column of the Train List (F2).
