Timing Load

Timing Load

Each train permitted to run on Network Rail's tracks has a defined timing load. This can be a generic definition such as:

  • EMU - Electric Multiple Unit, of any length
  • DMU - Diesel Multiple Unit, of any length
  • LD - Light Diesel Locomotive
  • LE - Light Electric Locomotive

On track machines use various generic definitions as:

  • 50-OTM - On Track Machine limited to 50mph
  • TRU - Track Recording Unit
  • UTU-R - Ultrasonic Test Unit Recording at 30MPH (Suffix of T is in Transit at 75MPH)

A specific class of train may be specified:

  • 390 - Class 390 EMU (Eurostar)
  • 321 - EMUs running on the Great Eastern Main Line and West Coast Main Line, nicknamed "Dusty Bins"
  • 166 - Express DMUs running on the Chiltern Line to places such as Aylesbury and Birmingham Snow Hill

A loco-hauled train is indicated firstly by the type of haulage (E for electric or D for diesel), followed by the trailing tonnage. For passenger trains it is assumed a weight of 35 tonnes per carriage:

  • D350 - Diesel hauled train with either 10 passenger/mail carriages or an unspecified number of freight wagons totalling 350 tonnes
  • E070 - Electric hauled train with either 2 passenger/mail carriages or an unspecified number of freight wagons totalling 70 tonnes
  • The actual tonnage on the day may be less than that specified.

Older schemes specified the number of carriages for passenger trains:

  • D2 - Diesel train with two carriages
