Dwell Times

Dwell Times

Dwell times override simulation defaults to give the timetable developer more control over station stop times under various scenarios.

There are eight possible values detailed below, which can be specified in a Train Type. The simulation defaults will be used for those values which are not specified. These dwell times apply throughout a train's timetable and are not location specific. If any of the eight dwell time values applicable to a Train Type are modified in an individual train timetable, the Train Type for that train changes to (Custom) although the other parameters (length, maximum speed etc.) remain as for the originally specified Train Type. If there is a reason within the timetable for an individual train to have different generic dwell time parameters to others of the same train type, the timetable writer is advised to create a new train type with the amended dwell times to avoid confusion for future users of the timetable.

The default and custom values can be overridden at specific locations by entering a dwell time at the relevant location in the Location List . This will not cause a defined train type to revert to (Custom). The dwell time for a train at a location is timed from the completion of any actions (joins, divides, crew changes etc.) the timetable specifies for that location so the timetable writer will need to consider whether the use of a dwell time is appropriate or whether a timetable rule to set the total stopping time should be applied. Note that the simulation still performs some randomisation for variety and Timetable Rules still apply.

Dwell times of zero are ignored and the simulation defaults will apply instead. A minimum value of 00:01 can be used to minimise the dwell time; however, in practice a dwell time of 00:01 is unlikely due to other actions the train performs whilst stopped.

Dwell times are only available in simulations running on the SimSig Loader.

Red signal move off Time after a red signal changes to a proceed aspect before a train will start moving
Station forward Dwell time at stations when the train does not change direction
Station reverse Dwell time at stations when the train reverses
Terminate forward Dwell time at stations when the train continues in the same direction but under a new identity, i.e. a new service
Terminate reverse Dwell time at stations when the train terminates and forms a new service in the opposite direction, e.g. at termini
Join Time taken to perform each joining activity
Divide Time taken to perform each dividing activity
Crew change Where the "crew change" flag is specified at a train's location, this indicates how long that crew change should take, e.g. to perform brake tests if required
