I understand from other groups forum web pages i.e. Signal Record Society, that the workstation currently in Kings Cross Box that controls the Hertford Loop will be migrated to the York ROC this coming week Monday 3rd December. This seems to also coincide with the introduction of the new Class 717 units which from other sources would appear to be happening with the introduction of the new working timetable starting 9th December. This may of course not happen as per the planned dates but progress moves on relentlessly.

Shame really, as the Class 313's have become a way of life for my commuting from New Southgate into town and must admit although I will miss them when they are gone they have been great servants for numerous years.

The death throws are upon us and catch them while you can.

As for the signalling being moved from one to another lets hope it all goes smoothly.

I wasn’t aware that the 313s would be disposed of in such short order - I’ve lived in Harringay for the last 4 years and have spent much time shuttling around this part of London on them. They are old and tired but as a fleet they have been properly thrashed haven’t they? I will miss them quite a bit!

Relentless progress, indeed.

What's quite amazing is that all 64 units are still around in some form or other after all these years.

not so long ago I travelled on GN 700 a GN 387 and a GN 313, bet you can't guess which was the most comfortable.

Managed 100 mph on a 313 before Watton At Stone opened between SVG and HFN

Bet the Driver was sacked and the 313 under went a heavy overhaul afterwards

First ones were built back in 1976. It would be interesting to know how many miles some of them have clocked up.

Getting back to the York ROC though. I believe that it will eventually control everything on the ECML from Kings Cross up to Edinburgh. How many workstations will that be?
Personally being of an age when there were numerous boxes that were still in existence along the route, there was something reassuring about it all.

Does anybody know of any interesting articles about this new ROC and where it can be found?

Geoff,

York ROC isn't new, it already controls a good chunk of the Transpennine network.

It's divided on the ops floor into "Sub ROCs", everything is currently in the TP sub ROC, and this will be the first workstation in the King's Cross sub ROC.

I suspect that was before they had such things as OTMR. You could get away with an awful lot in those days.

I recall (early - mid '80s) coming back from Crewe. We had a rather motely collection of stock (including some mk IIs - which were restricted to 100mph, even though some mk Is were permitted 110). I timed long stretches at 108mph (off the quarter mileposts, like Glyn), several 110s and even a 112. Whent he guard came round to do tickets I wondered whether our driver was on a finishing turn. "He is going a bit isn't he" was the laconic Brummie reply as we hit yet another wet spot (awful lot of them on the WCML in those days).

Happy days.

What we find interesting about that figure is how a 313 could even manage 100. Everyone I've spoken to struggled to get them far past 80!

I agree 100mph is unlikely as 313 are geared for 75mph and I belive that during the testing phase they are usually tested to an speed slighly over that, around 10%. (tho please correct me if I am wrong)

I realise that. Parts of Sheffield, Rotherham and out towards North Lincolnshire have all been added since 2016. I just wondered if anyone knew or knows what the full story will be or is currently anticipated to be. Always realising that even the best laid plans do change.

Current definite plan is for Kings Cross PSB to migrate into the ROC (Five workstations).

Eventually the whole of ECML to at least the border should go into the ROC, but how long that will take who knows?

Didn't a 313 get used on KGX-LDS services during the panic when all the 91s were withdrawn (some problem at Sandy, I think)? I seem to recall they were using any EMUs they could get their hands on.

Everything is supposed to be tested at 10% overspeed.

The only units I recall being used was 317 and 32x's

Having spent the last four nights working the Hertford WS I'm pleased that the transition from KX has gone smoothly and pretty much everything is working as it is supposed to. The only down side being I'm sat at the only pod in this sub ROC with anything in it as the other 6 await the transfer of panels from KX and part of Peterborough - it's like being back in a single manned location.

Hi Glyn, don't doubt you for a moment but it would be great if you could publish - maybe in spreadsheet format if easiest - the timings you took of that run as it looks like a real record setter from what I can see of other 313 runs. It would be helpful to have date, time, unit numbers etc. if you have them although I must admit I wasn't always good at recording the ancillary details.

Many thanks

Mike

it was back in late 85 or early 86

I didn't keep any records

I didn't really believe it myself at the time

however I did time over 4 different 1/4 mile stretches
