Seperate delays and early running 07/04/2019 at 13:55 #117316

Something which I've had more often recently on York and Sheffield particularly where problems have been caused are very early running freights eg a train entered 40 mins early at moorthorpe with a booked stop at Swinton delaying several trains behind it. Equally trains entering 20+ mins early at shaftholme jcn delaying class 1 behind them as far as colton.

I'd love to see a seperate slider for early running so I can choose to have delays only (obviously some people will want the choice of having early runners and this might be prototypical dependent on era)

I just feel that my enjoyment has been hampered a bit by these job stoppers that are unlikely to occur in real life (probably not unheard of though).

The developer can choose to have phone calls for early runners to avoid exactly this situation. I'll look into it a bit more to confirm that since its a while ago I last used it.

I'm sure Oxford and SwinDid are two sims that DO have this function as with the latter you would get a phone call from the fringe signaller asking if you could accept a train early and run it on reliefs/fast lines or hold it to time and run it on reliefs/fast lines.

Not sure exactly what other sims have the function but SwinDid def does.

Current Stafford sim also has the phone feature and plenty from Crewe Bas Hall Siganlman. Although it's not working much of the time when I have it in 'one of thoses days'

But I would like too see an additional option in F3 to allow early running freights or specials in general etc along with the current delays of other trains. Who wouldn't want a freight turning up 40mins before time for a Crew Change and have to wait a full 40mins before its done.. ah yes reminds me of Carlisle.. [not the sim]

It's in Oxford as a feature that was requested at the testing stage.

In the case of a freight booked to stop at Swinton, this is almost certainly for pathing purposes only, so passing time should be ticked. This wouldn't prevent all of the damage but would prevent a silly situation where a stop designed to prevent a slow train running in front of a faster one is stopping several faster trains from moving for some time.

Possibly although the timing in question was 2 mins which makes me think it was a crew change without the option ticked. I've had the same problem with freights running early off the hope Valley for Chesterfield and vice versa which cause major problems whereas in real life peak forest and Chinley are very careful about regulating early and late freights.

I do love this feature. Several Sims have it set up but I certainly think York at shaftholme junction and church Fenton would be a good call as well as tapton jcn main, Grindleford and moorthorpe for Sheffield.

Ah, I hadn't thought about crew changes. You would definitely need the phone call feature to deal with that.

In the Grindleford example though, there isn't actually anywhere for Grindleford to recess an early running train - one coming from Earles Sidings can be held within the sidings, but once on the main line it has to keep running - same if Chinley/New Mills South/Hazel Grove let one out, it has to get all the way through the Hope Valley lines as there are no loops to hold anything in the up direction.
There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

True but in reality Chinley wouldn't put it out first without ringing forward. You can't do that because the fringe is Grindleford so you have to put the call on them.

Exactly - it just makes the coding a bit more interesting as there are probably quite a few sims like this where things from a certain direction will always be held to time/booked order, or you're liasing with signallers controlling areas that aren't adjacent.
There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.
