But could NR upgrade the power supply on the OHLE north of Ely for the class 700s to allow for operation to Kings Lynn to happen?
Yes.

Peter
In theory, they could electrify anywhere, even a branch line on its own should they so wish. The catch is, is it financially worthwhile doing (Cost - Benefit ratio)

Haven't had a chance to download and try it yet, but just curious if it includes the class 800 test trains running almost daily between Doncaster Carr IEP depot and Leeds to KX?

Anything can be done with enough money. Aside from the OHLE there is the problem of short platforms at Littleport and Watlington. Do the 700s have Selective Door Operation like the entire Turbostar, Electrostar and Desiro families?

I believe so. For several months after introduction 12-car 700s, entering platform 2 at Finsbury Park, played an erroneous announcement that due to a short platform the rear doors would not open.

Yes - the 700's have selective door opening. I was on a 12 coach 701 that stopped at Knebworth to pick up passengers from a stranded 387 that was halted on the fast line a couple of months ago. Knebworth's platforms will only accommodate 8 car trains and the doors in my carriage towards the rear had 'door not in use' illuminated' by the operating button to prevent you trying to open it as they were not at the platform face.

I see on Network Rails WTT CJ01 May-Dec 2019 timetable includes 9U stopping services from Cambridge through to Maidstone East etc. Is this planned for later in the year? If so it would be a good addition to the current tt.

I think Cambridge / Maidstone is pencilled in for May 2020. I’m tending to write up-to-date KX timetables for Simsig, and no doubt this will happen nearer the time.

9U will mostly replace existing 2C services to/from KX, e.g. 9U35 replaces 2C35.
