Some very good work by the Bobby gets rather a minimal acknowledgement; a poster on the Blower suggests he had 39 seconds to notice the problem (no SPAD or TRA alarm) & make all necessary decisions, got points set 5 seconds before track circuit occupation would've locked them.

I thought exactly the same when I read the report - luckily there were no casualties (although no doubt a very frightened driver) but without the quick thinking in the box there could easily have been a head-on between the freight and the local.

Goes to show there is no substitute for experience. Here is a man 19 years in the job and 11 years at Motherwell. I wonder what the outcome would have been with someone with a lot less.

Does it? and how did you come to this conclusion? was there another incident in the same place/circumstances where a less experianced signaller failed to take the actions described and there was a disaster?
Dont get me wrong, experiance counts for alot, but with situations like this we are all trained in the same rules regarding SPADs etc. and there would be no way you would be 'let loose' on the panel without proving a thorough knowledge of the rules and the local area/panel/control systems/local instructions etc.

Sorry to get on high horse here but im sure some of the signallers on here that maybe dont have 19 years on the job, myself for 1, will be reading your coment as to say if a lesser experianced signaller was on then a disaster would have occured!
Nothing personall at all Ray before this gets blown out of proportion as happens sometimes, but the comment does fell like a bit of a snipe at lesser experianced signallers.

You seem to agree with me that experience counts for a lot, (though not of course everything). There have been issues over recent years (not really with signalling) where people seem to be put into jobs before they are ready. Nice to get confirmation that our signalling brethren do not fall into that category. Apologies if anyone with fewer than 19 years experience was offended by my comment.

Not to denigrate what the bobby did, but there wouldn't have been a head-on: the freight stopped a long way short of the distance to reach the local. The main difference he made is that it didn't run through some trailing points, which might have caused a low-speed derailment.

I am not sure you are correct here Clive. The freight was originally routed round the Carstairs curve (single line) which would have implied a head on worst case with the pass. I am not sure if it would have stopped short or not, but it is at least a bit doubtful it would have made the 15mph curve and therefore have been derailed, rather than dissipating itself down the WCML.
In deference to Daz "Well done that signalman" - (preferred term!!)

There but for the grace of God...

Sympathies with the motorists of course but I feel for the poor bobby too... what a frightful situation to find himself in.

Quote from Newcomers: Welcome to the forums!
You're not a proper signalman until you have three phone calls going on at once...Unquote

But you have to be careful. This has happened before e.g. Hatfield and probably others.
Returning to earlier posts it is ironic that here again was a man with 19 years experience - in this case still caught out by human frailty. He will be going over this in his mind for the rest of his life.
Does anyone know if the charges were dropped? Surely they should be.

Not a nice incident, I feel sorry for the signaller involved, we are all prone to make mistakes, after all we are only human. Goes to show how easy it is to become distracted.
As you say ray he will be going over this in his mind for the rest of his life. I could not agree with the investigation more with regards to the fact that the interlocking should have been there with the built in safegaurds to stop this happening.
