I don't have an overall favourite train as such, but when considered with the journey and the normal rolling stock, I think one of my favourites has to be a class 180 on local stopping services out of Manchester Victoria. Sitting in declassified First (2+1 seating) used to make a very nice change from the usual Pacers!

I have a soft spot for the old modernisation plan DMUs, where you could sit behind the driver and watch him at work and the line ahead. As a kid I used to do this on the Swindon - Gloucester line. More recently I got invited into the cab on the Wensleydale Railway. As for watching a train pass, an A4 at speed downgrade at Horton-in-Ribblesdale comes to mind. 1980 I think! For DMU's would have to be the thumpers! The sound of them and nothing better on a cold winter's day to warm you up than sitting on one of them

For me it's diesel and class 37s, particularly scottish or welsh 37/4s in revised livery for the memories of sticking my head out of the old coach windows going through the highlands and getting a full sensory experience of a diesel in action Since I haven't seen any of the pros mention them i'm a bit worried that maybe they were a real pig to drive/maintain though... Also, dare I say it but I quite like class 66s in the modern era? I live next to a typically passenger line coming out of liverpool street but one weekend when they were doing maintenance I heard my first 66 starting up with sirens and then pulsing away powerfully.. loved it to bits. Of the units we have around Lincoln - 156s - most reliable, most comfortable and most robust of the sprinters. Otherwise - 37s and 56s is what I grew up with. One thing though, never got many complaints about the noise from residents living on the North London Line, especially on the T&H when the diversions were on. The signalman I knew at South Tottenham bank loved it. He would ring me for the wagon numbers on a freightliner heading towards Willesden from Felixstowe with a pair of Cl.37/0s pulling a 25 loaded freightliner set. It would be 0200am in the morning & he'd hang the phone out of the box window & you could hear these engines open up from Tottenham South Jn & they would be on full power all the way through to Gospel Oak & as Kbarber says going past the box at South Tottenham not doing much more than 20mph & you could hear these Cl.37/0s for several miles. There would be about 10 of these trains over the North London line on nights. If you like alot of thrash then thats one of the best. As for the last lot of suggestions, you can tell its a generation thing as I don't rate any of those at all. Total rubbish in my view. Bring back loco hauled stock anyday for me & I'd settle for any 1st geberation diesel pulling it although Cl.45 or Cl.46 would be best Log in to reply |
