Scotland sims - signature is corrupt or invalid 27/02/2016 at 14:50 #80896

I've just tried downloading Central Scotland and Edinburgh, in both I get told the signature of 'name'.exe is corrupt or invalid. I tried downloading LTS and that worked fine, so I'm not sure what the difference is. Does anybody have any advice on fixing?

The installers are digitally signed but the certificate expired recently. I need to re-sign it with the current certificate. There is no security issue with the installer, but I do wish Windows said "expired" rather than "corrupt or invalid!"

In the meantime you should be able to ignore the message - I think there is an option to "run anyway".

Feel free to ignore me if you already know this.

I don’t know about code signing for applications. I do have some experience with code signing for drivers, though. There, when signing, there’s an option to pass a URL to the signing tool which will be used to generate a timestamped counter-signature (Verisign runs a public timestamping service which you can use for this purpose, for free). If you do this, then even after your own certificate expires, the package still works fine, because the counter-signature proves that your signature was made before your certificate expired. Maybe there’s a similar option you could use?

It did surprise me that expiry of the certificate renders the application invalid as well. But I need to look into it more, maybe there is an option I've missed. Thanks for the pointers which might help.

When using Microsoft’s “signtool” program, the pertinent option is “/t http://timestamp.verisign.com/scripts/timstamp.dll”.

Yes, that's the answer I found too - just yesterday! The exe has a countersignature on the certificates page so hope that will do it, but I still need to re-sign the older exes. Can I sign an already signed executable, replacing the original signature?

Much appreciated, thanks.

That I don’t know. You can always try it and see what happens (keeping another copy of the executable in a safe place)? Or maybe signtool has an option to remove existing signatures.

In Windows 10, you are able to download it and execute it after all the warnings at your own risk.

I've just tried to download Stafford and had the same problem.
I'm not offered the option to run at my own risk.
Any suggestions please, anyone?

View Stafford.exe in your Downloads. Right click the file then click "run anyway". A blue Windows Warning screen will pop. Click "more Info". You are offered a choice. Click "run anyway". As long as your computer is malware free, you should not have any problems.
