Would anyone happen to know the purpose of lineside sign saying "POINTS"? I was thinking it warned of catch points but then would the sign not read "Catch points"?

It's on a former heavy rail line, now light rail line. From the lettering I think it's a pre-1960s sign, and associated with lifted track as it is rusty and in the undergrowth.

It's at the former Old Trafford Junction (53.465257, -2.271440) on the MSJ&AR. Unfortunately no photo because it's quite difficult to capture at speed, but it is literally a rectangular sign saying "POINTS". Any paint it had has flaked away.

I recall seeing it occasionally when I was a tram driver - I've found this diagram (from the Signalling Record Society) from when it was heavy rail; no catch points are indicated (in 1969), and I can't imagine them being a later addition.

That said, using the NLS side-by-side map archives; there was a goods yard there shown in various eras and a small headshunt/arresting siding in roughly the location you pin pointed.

There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

There's a cab view of the section in question here: https://youtu.be/_3aKirOKfks?t=951
It doesn't seem that the sign is visible though.

Knowing the sign in question, it doesn't fit any of the descriptions of either catch points or points indicator I've seen in the rule book or the railsigns website - possibly a hybrid or one off creation?
