Over the last few days, and especially earlier today, there have been many mutterings of bugs on Carlisle. Please remember that Karl/headshot took over this simulation of his own volition, without payment, and spent many scores of hours fixing as many of the issues that the previous developer had neglected as he could with the information Karl had available. As such, please do not expect rapid fixes to each and every issue found: paid sims take priority.

Some posts were removed after multiple violations of the Code of Conduct by one individual, who is now taking a breather from the forum. We hate having to do that so it really is a last resort when warnings are ignored.

Thank you for understanding.

Also please remember that some of the "bugs" are actually known situations and documented in the manual. As Keith (kbarber) so ably explained in this post a lot of the operation around Carlisle at the time of the 1979-1980 TT was only documented in broad terms with the signallers on the panel having to make their own decision on the best way forward as each potential conflict arose. This is exacerbated in this particular period at Carlisle by the need to shoe-horn in the diversions from the East Coast Main Line following the Penmanshiel tragedy often at a time when there was little room for manoeuvre because the station was already near to capacity.

I speak having a vested interest as I have spent a lot of time working for Pascal (58050) in sorting out things like shunt moves so you can lay a lot of the conflicts at my door, but I also have to say that I find that the conflicts make the timetable one of the most interesting and challenging for a single player from the whole SimSig catalogue.

So thanks to Geoff and Clive for all of the core code work to make SimSig possible then to Tom for creating the original sim, Karl for starting the process of bringing the sim up to current SimSig standards and Pascal for manually entering the details for more than 1200 trains into the TT, most with many timing points and with many varied consists. And it is all for free.

I struggle to understand why people bitch about free things - There isn't much about these days that are free and currently there are far more important things to be worrying about than a minor bug on a sim - I.E a worldwide BUG grrr

Obviously I haven’t seen the deleted posts, however I don’t think most people “bitch” about bugs or issues, just that everyone here shares the same goal of wanting to develop and enhance SimSig. Personal view however I don’t think people should be discouraged from posting issues, obviously what happens from then onwards is down to the developers. As someone who is happy to share timetables personally I’d prefer and encourage people to share any issues they find in my work so that ultimately it can be made better.

One comment regarding free sims. Personally I have paid licenses for quite a few sims, however luck of the draw has it that one of my favourites happens to be a free one. I can’t help wishing at times that it *wasn’t* a free one so it’s not at the back of the hypothetical queue. Again personal view however I’d be more than happy for all the sims to be made payware.

I should also like to offer my thanks to Karl for taking Carlisle on. The nature of its free provision meant many years between update, which was fine and one learned to adjust to the foibles of the sim, so any attention given on even a paid-first basis will be very welcome.

I will certainly not be the only user who ranks Carlisle very, very highly in the sim list for its mix of complexity, history and variety; aided and abetted, of course, by the wickedly complicated 79-80, the greatest timetable of them all.

Looking forward to many more years of enjoyment from Carlisle.

David, I have seen your posts and I would not put them in the bracket of bitching but more like constructive feedback (and maybe a wishlist). But you will note that some of the posts broke the code of conduct, that to me is not constructive, but bitching pure and simple.

And I dont think Geoff is discouraging people from posting about bugs but as you know from experience, there is a right way and a wrong one.

It is a sad fact that the more you give people the more that they want. Sadly more true in today’s world.

David, I certainly don't want people to be discouraged from posting genuine issues, and I'm happy for them to be tracked on Mantis and I'll do my best when time permits to fix them. The Carlisle sim is a complex beast behind the scenes, which has the unfortunate side effect of increasing the amount of time it takes for me to get things fixed.

I'd also agree with you that people who complain are very much in the minority, as was the case here.

Indeed, a tiny minority spoil it for others. The deleted posts were astonishingly demanding, a "Ken" if you like (as in a "Karen"), and a complete lack of respect for the Code of Conduct - not once (warning given), not twice (second warning given), but thrice (temporary ban). Please don't let my post deter anybody from posting any issues: I'm just trying to point out that Carlisle is lower in priority than paid-for sims.

Also I note I didn't reference the timetables. These are also contributed by unpaid volunteers, so credit (and tolerance for bug fixing due to personal lives) should go to these too, as I have rightly been reminded.

Thanks for the reassurance Geoff. One of the (many) things which sets Simsig apart is the responsiveness to issues, which with the wide range of experience and knowledge within the “community” has really helped push an already excellent concept even further. Long may this continue.

And it’s also just like the real thing, as many of the modern software-based signalling systems end up getting repeated software drops in response to end-user feedback!
