Introduction

Located in far south west England, the Cornwall simulation covers the western extremity of the Great Western main line. The simulation covers approximately 70 miles of the main line from just outside Plymouth to the terminus at Penzance, and a further 50 miles of branch lines serving coastal towns and freight facilities. The area is still controlled primarily by mechanical signal boxes, however a succession of small rationalisation and improvement schemes have modified the installations substantially from their initial forms. This process is reflected in the simulation, with three eras covering the late 1990s up to the latest capacity improvements made in 2019. The end result is a lot of detailed, bespoke signalling right accross the simulation. Absolute block is in use between most of the signal boxes, and token working is used on most of the branch lines. The entire area is a peninsular as far as rail is concerned: the line to Plymouth is the only connection to the rest of the network.

Traffic is a mix of long-distance, regional and local passenger services (with each branch generally holding a captive shuttle service) with some local freight workings between the various china clay sidings and the docks at Fowey, plus the occasional longer-distance service from Moorswater cemement terminal. Single line sections on the main line will require careful manangement if delays occur, as will pathing mainline services around the branch shuttle services.

Most timetables are relatively quiet (typically 1 train per hour on the main line), so this is an ideal simulation to appreciate the intricacies of AB signalling without being rushed by a hectic service. That said, delays on the branch shuttles can mount so stay on your toes!

Cornwall is a payware simulation- to play beyond a short demo period requires the purchase of a license from the Products area .
